Here’s our foundational scripture

“Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert."  Isaiah 43:18-19 NKJV

Don't Let Your Fitness Journey Become Your Life Journey

Did you know that when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, it took 40 years to make an eleven-day trip? This 40-year journey should have only taken 11 days. They circled a mountain in the wilderness for 40 years. “Because of their obstinance and disobedience and forgetfulness of God’s promises, God delayed their entry into the Promised Land by 40 years.” *Source https://www.christianity.com/wiki/bible/what-can-we-learn-from-the-israelites-wandering-the-desert-for-40-years.html

From this example, think about how long you’ve been circling the mountain of trying to eat right and work out. Consider all the diets you’ve tried and ended up right back where you started. The Israelites were delayed their access because they forgot God’s promises and they were obstinate and disobedient. Some of us may not even know the promises of God. Many of us grew up unaware we could ask Him to help us with our fitness, but God can bring us out of our wilderness and do a new thing in us. In the book of Deuteronomy 2:3, it says,

“You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north.”

It’s important to realize that God has much more for us and that we have not arrived yet, especially if we’re stuck circling a mountain of disobedience or obstinance. God wants us to know and stand on His promises. God is seeking an encounter with you, He wants you to turn to Him. In His grace you can let go of your past attempts at getting fit and begin again, and become new in Him.

Meet Miranda

Miranda came to me, because she was really struggling to get her weight down to a healthy range. She said she had tried so many times to eat healthy and exercise, but she always ended up quitting and it made her feel hopeless. Miranda had no idea that she could ask God to help her or that He cared about her desperation to get healthy. When I shared these promises with her, she said they were the life-changing help and hope she needed. They got her mindset right and gave her the strength she needed in her day-to-day life to live Fit God’s Way.

Let’s be quick to remember that we need to hold onto these promises and believe God more than the enemy’s lies. We have an enemy who will do everything he can to defeat us. That’s why he’s after your health.

 1 Peter 5:8 tells us...

"Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour."

God tells us to be wise as serpents but harmless as doves in Matthew 10:16-18, so let’s be wise to remember when doubt and frustration come that the enemy is doing anything he can to block us from progress. He hates your progress.

Do you need to stand on God’s promises and ask Him to do a new thing in you?

Did you know these promises are available to you? Daily, I hear from women who have no idea that God is waiting and wanting to help them. Until we confront issues that prevent us from God’s best, we can’t experience change. Many women want to lose weight, but so often the weight they need to lose first is the weight on their hearts. The weights of rejection, the past, shame, and unforgiveness are a few examples of what can be preventing us from getting healthy. Ask God to search your heart and let Him bring any issues to the surface. Stand on His promises, repeat them back to Him in your prayers, and let your heart be healed so He can do something new. Isaiah 55:11, says, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

Don’t allow your hurt to be bigger than God’s desire to heal you.

Here’s a list of common hurts we hide in our hearts. You are not alone if you feel any one of these.

  • Not going to God first about my fitness and food struggles
  • Every time I lose weight and then put it back on and sometimes more…
  • The gym memberships and the workout equipment I bought and rarely used
  • All the times I started a diet and quit
  • Having the wrong motivation for fitness
  • The foods that make me gluttonous
  • Shame over the body God gave me
  • Thinking this is hopeless
  • Having unrealistic expectations
  • Being lazy
  • A spirit of entitlement
  • Eating to numb my pain
  • Holding onto weight because of a past traumatic injury
  • Being judged for wanting to get in great shape
  • A root of bitterness, anger, or jealousy
  • Believing I’m destined to be overweight or unhealthy
  • Thinking it’s impossible
  • Body idolatry
  • Making fitness an idol
  • Comparing myself to others
  • Thinking my value comes from what I look like
  • Desperately trying to lose weight to look good for an event, instead of taking care of myself every day
  • Not teaching my kids how to be healthy
  • The clothes in my closet that I’m praying will fit me again
  • The way I talk about myself so critically
  • Hating the way God made my body
  • Valuing my appearance more than I should
  • Judging other fit women and secretly being jealous of them
  • Getting sucked into overly filtered social media selfies and letting them make me feel less than
  • Thinking it’s easier for other people and that I have it harder
  • The lies the enemy has made me believe about myself
  • The way I’ve let other people make me believe that I’m not good enough
  • Settling for less than God’s best for me.
  • Giving up

Now, let’s hear a list of new things we need God to do for us, which one do you need to do?

  • Believe there is victory over my fitness struggles
  • Gain the wisdom I need over food
  • Hit pause before I eat and invite the Holy Spirit to help me walk in self-control
  • Rely on Your strength to workout
  • Find motivation to take care of myself to fulfill every plan You have for my life
  • Be brave enough to take workout classes regardless of how I look or how unfit I feel
  • Listen to what you say about me more than anyone else opinion
  • See myself through Your eyes
  • Stop falling for worldly get fit quick gimmicks
  • Find confidence knowing You formed me and made me and you don’t make mistakes
  • Get free from the number on the scale, in my clothes, or the candles on my cake
  • Know that it’s not too late and I’m not too old
  • Find peace in surrendering all of this to you daily
  • Know I can become the woman you want me to be

Write Yourself a “God Can Do a New Thing in Me Letter”

It’s time to write a new chapter of your fitness story, but you need to cross the bridge from your old way of getting fit and feeling confident to a new way in Christ. When I was going through a weight loss and body transformation, I hit a wall of frustration. It had been weeks of eating right and working out and the scale wasn’t budging. I called a good friend and shared what I was going through. She asked me, “Have ever written a letter to God about how hard fitness can feel and how you need His help?”

When our call ended, I grabbed my journal curled up on the couch and let the words spill onto the pages...along with my tears.

Prior to this rainy Saturday afternoon, I had never admitted to myself how painful and frustrating this was, and how I didn’t want to feel like a failure because of fitness. The words didn’t lie. I didn’t worry about grammar, I didn’t judge myself, I just let it all out. I looked down and saw words like hopeless, not good enough, overwhelmed, and frustrated. Looking back, I know it was God’s way of showing me this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.

We can do nothing apart from Him, so friend, hand God your pain today, take Him to the places that make you quit, stand on His promises and become a new you in Him.

I challenge you to try it. Grab your journal and write your God can do a new thing in me letter, and watch Him work!

"Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her! “ (Luke 1:45 NIV)
