I’ve witnessed hundreds of people work tirelessly to lose weight only to gain it all back. In fact, more than 80% of people who have lost weight on a dieting plan regain all or more of it after two years.12 Sadly, this is the very result of most diets because the common short term mindset of dieting overrules the lifestyle change that should be happening. Lasting change requires lasting commitment.
I can’t even count the number of times I’ve lost weight only to gain it all back. Until I got my mindset right, I was on a never-ending roller coaster of restriction and overconsumption—happiness and depression. A pivotal shift in my thinking came when I realized I wanted to be happy and healthy all the time, not only after I’d lost weight for a special occasion.
ββThe enemy of self-control is instant gratification; it’s that one cheesy nacho that leads to a whole plate more. Keep in mind that you’re not a failure because of what you eat—enjoy a treat every now and then; but, just as we need balance when eating healthfully, we need to balance our moments of indulgence as well. One way we might do so is by implementing the 5 Ps, which help us to keep our focus on God and free of the tendency to overeat.

Pause before you decide to eat and ask yourself if you’re really hungry or if you’re just feeding your emotions, boredom, or stress.
Pray before meals. Ask God to help you eat the right foods in the right amounts and for the discipline to take care of your body (His temple). I pray to surrender my appetite to Him daily and remind myself using the acronym S.A.F.E. (Surrender Appetite Faithfully Every Day).
Portion each meal. Be mindful of the amount of food you’re eating. If you want to indulge in a treat, serve yourself a portion on a plate and then put the rest away. Refrain from eating out of containers, bags, boxes, or pans.
Practice eating slowly. Take smaller bites and chew them between ten to twenty times. Try setting your fork down between bites and thinking of food as fuel and nourishment rather than comfort or reward.
Plan ahead. Make healthy meals as often as you can and always have healthy snacks on hand. Don’t wait until you’re hungry to find food. I know I rarely make good choices when I am starving.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. —Mathew 5:14-16 esv
Let’s be honest, being unhealthy and out of shape makes it harder for our light to shine. Putting aside what we look like physically, where are we going to get the energy and endurance we need to carry out our God-given purposes if we’re overweight and out of shape? We need to find the motivation to get healthy, and we need to discipline ourselves to see its value because we each have a unique calling on our lives. Carrying out our purposes without our health makes this very difficult.
Our flesh will give up and quit on us every time, so we can’t rely on our own strength—that’s why the Faith Inspired Transformation is Christ-centered, not self-centered.
Don’t cheat yourself and live your life feeling less than who God created you to be.
