How to Get Free from Perfectionism & Performance with Demetria Stallings

(Press play to listen, or enjoy reading the highlights below.)

Have you ever dreamed of doing something, but thought, I can’t do that – what will people say?

Or felt pressured to be perfect, but it’s so hard to measure up to the expectations of others?

Do you think you have to perfectly follow a plan to find results, but when you don't, you beat yourself up?

The pressure to be perfect can be absolutely paralyzing.

Confession! I’m speaking from experience.

Here's a real-life example, I was nervous about this episode because it was a LIVE Stream on Facebook and Youtube.

But I know the Word – Galatians 5:1 says,For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

I had to make the choice to be free in Christ, free to accept that if I show up in Him, He’ll do the rest.

And you can too, friend!

Have you ever considered what would happen if you surrendered your perfectionism and plan to God and decided to perform to an audience of one...Him?

This episode will equip you to do just that, and it is extra special because I was blessed to have Demetria Stallings joins me.

Demetria Stallings is a Worship Leader, Speaker, and Purpose Coach.

Here's what we want to help you do:

  • Get yourself to show up, imperfectly.
  • Overcome the pressure to put on a front instead of just being you!
  • Get unstuck, on track, and free in Christ.

There are three main reasons women get stuck in a rut and can’t get fit or find the success they want:

Perfectionism:

Stuck thinking you have to be perfect and unless you are you can't be happy or find results?

Let’s trade the lie that we could ever be perfect for the only one who is perfect, Jesus!

The Perfection mindset doesn’t work for many reasons:

  • There is no perfection on this side of heaven.
  • Perfectionism puts the focus on our abilities: our strength, our plan, our ways, and not HIS!
  • He wants our full reliance on Him, and He must be 1st place.

Performance

  • Thinking you have to act and do everything right to feel worthy, successful, or good enough, but you grapple with feeling defeated and hopeless.
  • Feeling like you have to keep up a good front or people are going to find out the truth that you really don’t have it all together. (no one does!)
  • The enemy uses approval addiction to control and rob us of our confidence and drain us of our strength and worth.

We who love Jesus don’t perform to a crowd, we perform to an audience of one!

Let’s trade performing and approval addiction for Freedom in Christ.

Plan

Does your plan put God front and center, is He your source?

  • We may have a plan, but God orders our steps. His way is always the best.
  • We experience frustration and exhaustion when force our plan.
  • The solution is to seek God's plan, surrender it to HIm, and show up daily in HIs strength.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths. –
Proverbs 3:5-6

Prayer

Dear God,

Demetria and I come together and ask that you help every woman listening to get unstuck, wipe the old slate clean, and have a new start with you.

In this moment, we ask that you erase the pain from past failed attempts at getting healthy and the lies the enemy tells us that we can’t be our best for you.

We know in you that no weapon formed against us will prosper.

We are a new creation in you. Your word says you will do a new thing, Lord, do a new thing, open our eyes to your ways, empower us through the Holy Spirit guiding us to honor you in our bodies, free from perfectionism, free from performance, and free to carry out your perfect plan.

Today we stand together, united firm in the faith. Direct our steps, Lord!

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Freedom in Christ is how we get unstuck and back on track.

  • Trade strict diets and man-made food for God-made goodness.
  • Trade the lie of perfectionism for I’m enough in Christ, He calls me His Masterpiece.
  • Trade the trap of your plan, for Him to do abundantly more than you could ever ask or imagine.
